Advanced Clinical Aromatherapy in Wound Care
This seminar adds a new dimension to traditional wound care. Integrating essential oils into care for acute and chronic wound conditions will be explored. Discussion will include when and how to use aromatherapy independently or in conjunction with traditional treatments to accelerate healing and improve outcomes. Cases range from simple wound issues such as stage I pressure ulcers to complex Stage IV ulcers and refractory post-surgical cases. Evidenced based medicine will be interwoven into the course along with discussion and case studies from hospital, nursing home, clinic and hospice patients.
Additionally, an overview of how one health care system in the United Sates has utilised aromatherapy in patient care will be presented. Nursing policy, protocols, and challenges to implementing complementary modalities will be discussed.
Course content:
*Review skin physiology
*Identify acute versus chronic wounds
*Phases of wound healing
*Selection of essential oils based on safety, diagnosis, type of wound, culture results
*Aromatic wound care for skin tears, abrasions, boils, abscesses, lacerations, burns
*Aromatic wound care for pressure ulcers, diabetic ulcers, and venous stasis
*Special populations including diabetics, immunocompromised and hospice patients
*End of life care for fungating tumours and refractory wounds
*Appropriate bases and carrier oils
*Methods of application; techniques, utilizing bandaging materials and negative pressure devises
*Case studies including pressure ulcers, folliculitis barbae, hidradenitis suppurativa, pyoderma gangrenosum, cellulitis, infected wounds, fungating tumors
*Integration of aromatherapy into nursing care and a health care institution in the United States
*Policy and protocols
Diane Ames, RN, MSN, APNP
Diane is a family nurse practitioner from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA who has mentored and presented numerous lectures to medical professionals on how to integrate essential oils in to their practice and organizations. Diane is a certified clinical aromatherapy practitioner who utilizes complementary modalities in her practice. She and a partner created Balia Wellness Center which offers educational classes, consults, massage therapy, skin care and retail products. Additionally, Diane works part time for a large health care organization and teaches in a graduate nurse practitioner program at a private university.
