Ethel Burns
Clinical Aromatherapy in Labour and Childbirth
In the UK, aromatherapy is gaining in popularity as a care option during labour. It can facilitate maternal coping mechanisms and sense of control during labour and it offers midwives and aromatherapists a tool to support the physiology of labour and birth.
This workshop will explore the evidence base, and discuss and debate the logistics and challenges of introducing aromatherapy into mainstream practice. It is aimed at midwives and aromatherapists who have a particular interest in childbirth. The course will aslso cover the physiology of labour and birth along with the use of aromatherapy in the antenatal and postnatal period.
Ethel Burns is primarily engaged in investigations pertaining to water immersion during labour and/or birth, and the use of aromatherapy in childbirth. Ethel carried out an international audit of the practice of bathing during labour and waterbirth, and facilitated a randomized controlled trial on aromatherapy. She is a lecturer at Oxford Brookes University.
