Complementary Therapies for Special Needs

Eileen Hughes - Workshop Facilitator
An exciting opportunity to experience the nurturing power of touch.
After leaving ‘education’ as a teacher Eileen retrained and took aromatherapy and massage into the community; mainly working with those with special needs – both physical, mental and the profoundly disabled this client group includes individuals with autism, ADHD; Aspergers, Smith-Magenis, Downs and Fragile X
Syndromes - displaying hyperactivity,
challenging behaviours and severe learning difficulties. .
She has worked for Newcastle Leisure and Libraries Services which provides aromatherapy and massage to children and young people with special needs. This programme encompassed the whole
family and Eileen also worked with
siblings and parents. Within this role she worked for other agencies working with the families, providing workshops and guidance on the safe use of oils. She also teaches the ‘story’ massage. This is her adaptation of the Massage in Schools
Programme which concentrates on a framework within education. Eileen found that she had to change the name – hence story massage, to include adults with special needs who have greatly
benefited from the programme.
Having worked for Social Services working with adults with special needs in a
residential setting, she provided
workshops for Sure Start’s varied client base.
“The behavioural changes experienced by these individuals is profound. Parents and carers never cease to be astounded by the results of the simple power of touch.”
